Our counting system is based on the number 10, but there is no mathematical reason for that: it is purely a fluke of biology. Other cultures over time have used other systems, however. We shall look at some of these and also explore the development of different types of number, from simple counting up to so-called 'imaginary' numbers. Do such things really 'exist'?
As regular attendees know, there is ample parking in the old playground behind the Braeport Centre. Refreshments will be available after the talk and discussion. There is no charge for the talk itself, parking or teas and coffees.
The organising team of Donald Davidson, Angus Annan and I hope to see you on the day. It helps the Centre's staff to have some idea of numbers for seating in advance, so please contact me if you think you might come. However, do not be deterred if your decision to attend is a last-minute one; just turn up and swell the audience.
