Keith writes: The next outing is suitable for anyone who can walk for about 5 miles. It is a gentle ramble around the Callander flood plain which proved popular way back in April 2009. It offers a surprisingly varied circuit, mainly to the west of the town, including interesting historic sites in the Bridgend suburb area containing Roman remains, an old walled burial ground and a preaching mound. Throughout the walk, there are views of the surrounding hills. For the energetic, there is the possibility of climbing Dunmore hill topped by its ancient fort and the prominent glacial erratic of Samson's Stone.
In short, this a a local, low-level walk, with virtually no ascent (perhaps a couple of hundred feet overall). The route is along a combination of metalled paths, forestry tracks and cycle ways, so underfoot conditions are good. Walking shoes are normally adequate and the most comfortable. The distance is about 5 miles and the time taken 2.0 - 2.5 hours depending on the number of stops.
This walk will start from the public carpark near Kilmahog at 10.00 am on Wednesday 22 August 2012
From Stirling, follow the A84 to Callander. Go through the town and turn left onto the A821 towards Loch Venachar and the Trossachs. Shortly afterwards (within 1 km) turn left into the public car park. In the unlikely event of this being full, there is also a free Forestry Commission parking area on the opposite side of the road. The nearest toilets and refreshments are at the Visitor Centre in Kilmahog. Other options exist in the town nearby.
