Sian remarks –
I got into translating French crime fiction by accident, after retiring from Stirling – earlier translations were of heavyweight historians. Over the past few years, I've translated several novels by Fred Vargas, a quirky best-selling author of police procedurals, and most recently joined the Penguin project to re-issue all of Simenon.
I'll talk about the traps, perils and pleasures of the genre - I sometimes think every translator has to become a detective.
