Walk: Balmerino Abbey

Wednesday 20 July - 10:30am
Meeting point: Parking area at the western end of Wormit on Bay Road. Follow ‘Bay Road’ westwards until it reaches the Tay rail bridge. Drive underneath the bridge and continue a short distance to the parking area on the shore.

Description: A pleasant and relatively easy 5 mile circular walk initially along the Fife Coastal Trail and affording great views over the Tay estuary. It will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. At Balmerino we have the opportunity of exploring the ruined abbey built by a Cistercian monastic community founded in 1227 to 1229. It is also a pleasant place to sit and enjoy refreshments we have brought with us. Depending on the weather, our return route will be via a higher path passing through recently planted woodland and affording good views across the estuary.

Please note: The track has a number of short inclines and can be very muddy in places. Walking boots are essential, particularly after rain. There are no public toilets in this area but ‘The View’ restaurant/coffee shop is close by the start of the walk.
