Walk: Union Canal and Water of Leith

Thursday 29 March - 10:30am
This walk is 6 miles long. taking 2.5-3 hrs. Rendez-vous point: forecourt outside Haymarket station at 1030. The walk brings together the Edinburgh section of the Union canal from Fountainbridge to the aqueduct at Slateford and the central section of the Water of Leith from Slateford to the West End. Please let Bill Kidd know if you plan to come along: postmaster@eileenandbill.plus.com.

The walk offers an interesting combination of urban topography with green spaces and open vistas and some unusual views of otherwise familiar landmarks.    For fuller information, see the Union canal website, and https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lothian/water-of-leith-2.shtml   Note that there are steps from the canal towpath to the riverbank at Slateford, and from riverbank back to street level for the final stretch into Haymarket but the walk is otherwise level throughout on good footpaths and pavements, so boots are not essential. Toilet facilities and refreshments/snacks are available at Haymarket station and at Slateford Visitor Centre where we’ll make an intermediate stop.

The 0928 train service from Dunblane, stopping at Bridge of Allan (0931) and Stirling (0935) is scheduled to arrive at Haymarket at 1029.  Alternatively, drive to Ingliston ‘Park and Ride’ and catch the tram to Haymarket.
